If you visit next week for Field Day or an awards program, be sure to check out the latest 5th Grade Collaborative Art. We have a tradition that the out-going class create an art piece that will hang forever in our school.
This year’s work is titled “Dare To Dream Big”. Each canvas represents one class. Each student in the class got to draw and paint a star. The medium is acrylic paint on canvas. The art is displayed across the hall from the back computer lab.

4th grade studied depth and learned how to create a vanishing point. They were given a choice of mixed media including markers, crayons, and colored pencils.
3rd grade explored radial symmetry and created stained glass windows using tissue paper.
Kindergarten learned about symmetry. We dipped a piece of yarn in black paint and arranged it on one side of our butterfly. We folded the paper over to print the design on both sides. When the paint dried, we colored the wings using crayons and made both wings symmetrical.
1st grade reviewed line, color, and texture and created Hot Air Balloon collages. These are mixed media with oil pastels and tempera cakes.
2nd grade reviewed the color wheel and hid a color wheel as an umbrella. These are mixed media with oil pastels and tempera cakes.
5th graders studied the color wheel in more depth. We used oil pastels and learned how to blend primary and secondary colors to make tertiary colors. We used the color wheels to make eye collages.
Ms. Onnika Johnson was very helpful as art teacher for the day!
I don’t have time to hang all the artwork in the hallway, but here are some great examples that I had to share.
5th Grade-Geo Snowflakes exploring positive and negative space. Kindergarten-Penguin Collages practicing drawing, cutting, and gluing. 1st Grade-Painted Penguins. We worked in fine motor skills with a paintbrush. We didn’t draw any of the penguin shapes before painting. 2nd Grade-Snow Globes. We explored a new resist technique with salt water. Mix a solution of 1 cup hot water and 1 cup Epsom salts. Paint on dark colored paper and it will form crystals as it dries. |
