Kindergarten is beginning to play the mallet instruments. Our introductory lesson uses the story of Goldilocks to help students make the connection between size and pitch. Bigger instruments usually sound lower and smaller instruments usually sound higher. We took turns using three sizes of xylophones to represent our bear family.

Ms. Montgomery has shown excellent growth as an educator during her time here at Cedar Grove. She will be with us for one more week. Then she will graduate from UofL and begin her job search. Here is a clip from a kindergarten lesson teaching rhythm. The students loved racing to the leaf pile to find the correct rhythm pattern.
Kindergarten had their first lesson with instruments last week. Our goal for this activity is knowing how to keep our instrument quiet when it is not our turn. We also explored dynamics playing loudly or quietly appropriate to the song. This video features Mrs. Shelton’s class performing “Five Little Monkeys Swinging In a Tree”.
All three kindergarten classes have been rockin’ it this week! So, they earned a reward! They each got to play the gong before lining up to leave class.
Mrs. Huckabee’s Kindergarten class is practicing lateral spatial awareness while dancing the Patty Cake Polka. Spatial awareness is the ability to understand and interact with the environment around you. Lateral spatial awareness is determining left from right. Developing these skills also improves other areas such as math and visual perception. Of course, I don’t tell the kindergarteners all of this. They think we are just having fun doing a dance. ?
Kindergarten is learning about symmetry. This is the first half of this project. Pics of the finished pieces will be posted soon.
Mrs. Shelton’s 1st/Kindergarten class is practicing reading a clock and performing Wee Willie Winkie on the Xylophones.

Mrs. Strange’s kindergarten class enjoyed dancing to the Nutcracker March. We are beginning to recognize instruments by their sound. When they heard trumpets, they were supposed to march like toy soldiers. When they heard the strings, they were supposed to sword fight. When they heard the flutes, they scurried like mice. |
